host may have disabled the mail() function…fix w/o using plugins?

I get the error above when trying to have a new password sent to me (I know the password, but the functionality doesn’t work). I’ve gotten it to work using a smtp plugin, but we want to find a fix that doesn’t use a plugin (slightly long story). I searched around and saw the ‘create a wordpress@yourdomain.com’ with your domain tools and then put it in the settings in WP, but that’s not working for us either.

Any other solutions out there? Instead of spending the rest of the day googling I figured I’d throw it out here. Thanks for your time.
