can anyone help, i have been desperatly trying to make one of my posts an index/homepage that will be displayed on its own, however, each time i add a new post it adds it underneath the homepage index article. i have gone into public in posts and ticked make sticky for that post to show only on the homepage, have also downloaded sticky frontpage and have that post ticked only to show on frontpage and still cannot resolve. I want the index page to stay the same with post links to my inner pages showing on the right. Very frustrating!
Any help would be massively appreciated.

if you want just one post on your front page...
Make a page instead. Then assign that to be your static front page in settings->reading
Then, only that content will be on your front page
Note when doing this, you need to make a second page which you will assign for your posts to live on in settings->reading
I think what you want is to create a Static Front Page. Here is the Codex article that describes how to do it:
