[resolved] Home Page without menu (30 posts)

    Hi everyone,

    I'm looking for a way to have a home page that asks a question
    'what are you here for?'

    and people can click either 'x' or 'y' and be taken to the appropriate page which will then have a menu etc.

    I don't want a menu on the home page.

    Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks :)
    Emma

    Sure,

    Create a page template based on page.php named front-page.php.

    In it, edit get_header() to get_header( 'front' )

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_header
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy#Front_Page_display
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy#Page_display

    Create header-front.php from header.php.

    Edit header-front.php to remove the default menu and to add you questions and links.

    This work should all be done in a Child Theme where you can also style your new section(s).

    Thanks for your help but I'm still a bit confused - I'm not sure how to create a page template based on page.php

    I think once I've done that, I'll understand how to edit the code etc.

    Thanks again:)

    What theme are you using? Do you have a Child Theme set up? That's the first step...

    You could also possibly just use a landing page plugin...

    No, I don't have a child theme set up as yet.

    I understand I have to do this through my root directory, which I can't locate.

    I'm hosted through Go Daddy if that helps at all.

    Thanks!

    I've got my FTP set up and have created a child theme folder using this link

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    My next (maybe stupid) question is whether I need a program to write my style sheet or if I can do it on word? I have dropped a word file into my blackbird.child folder but it is not appearing on my wordpress dashboard like it's supposed to.

    Thanks

    You need to use a plain text editor - Word is not compatible with websites. There are many free text editors - your computer likely has one already.

    Also, don't use a "dot" in the folder name - it may not work - just use blackbirdchild.

    I've transferred the style sheet to my plain text editor and added it to my FTP under 'style.css' in my 'blackbird-child' folder but it still isn't showing in my dashboard on wordpress - should it automatically be available there or am I missing a step?

    So is the new folder in this location:

    wordpress
       wp-content
          themes
             blackbird
             blackbird-child
                style.css (your new one)

    If so, what's in the new file - it should only be that short top section?

    yep, it is and the following is in the file:

    /*
    Theme Name: Blackbird
    Theme URI:
    Description: Child theme for the Blackbird theme
    Author: Emma Chitty
    Author URI:
    Template: Blackbird
    Version:
    */

    @import url("../blackbird/style.css");

    So close - just change this - no capital B:

    Template: blackbird
  16. emmachitty

    it now reads

    /*
    Theme Name: Blackbird
    Theme URI:
    Description: Child theme for the Blackbird theme
    Author: Emma Chitty
    Author URI:
    Template: blackbird
    Version:
    */

    @import url("../blackbird/style.css");

    and it's still not working - should it literally just appear in 'appearance > themes when I search for 'blackbirdchild'?
    Do I have to have a plugin I'm forgetting about?

    Oops, sorry I missed one other key thing - you have to use a different name here:

    Theme Name: Blackbird Child

    Otherwise WP sees it as the same theme.

    /*
    Theme Name:     blackbird child
    Description:    Child theme blackbird
    Author:         Emma Chitty
    Template: A supported theme name here (check theme)

    I am now getting the following message:

    Broken Themes

    The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description
    Template is missing.

    Maybe I created confusion above - sorry - these are the lines you MUST have (the top one can be anything except "Blackbird"

    /*
    Theme Name: Blackbird Child
    Template: blackbird
    */

    @import url("../blackbird/style.css");

    Thanks so much for your help - I'm still getting the same error message saying the template is missing.

    Can you switch to another theme and then back to the child?

    the child isn't showing up when I search - it's just coming up with that error message.

    Let's go back to what you have set up - is the new folder in the themes folder?

    wordpress
       wp-content
          themes
             blackbird
             blackbird-child
                style.css (your new one)

    And can you copy from that style.css file what you have in it?

    I have realised one mistake - I had the 'style.css' as a folder with the file saved in it, rather than as a file.

    I've corrected that now, so my style.css is a file.

    I now have the following in my style.css file -

    {\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\cocoartf1187\cocoasubrtf340
    {\fonttbl\f0\fnil\fcharset0 Consolas;}
    {\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;\red240\green240\blue245;}
    \paperw11900\paperh16840\margl1440\margr1440\vieww10800\viewh8400\viewkind0
    \deftab720
    \pard\pardeftab720

    \f0\fs24 \cf0 \cb2 /*\
    Theme Name: Blackbird Child\
    Template: blackbird\
    */\
    \
    @import url("../blackbird/style.css");}

    and when I search it on wordpress the problem is now:

    The parent theme is missing. Please install the "blackbird\" parent theme.

    I think/hope once I fix this it will be created!

    Look at all that "Stuff" in that file - that's likely from using Word? Or maybe it's saved in the wrong format. What text editor did you use?

    I didn't think that was supposed to be there...! I used TextEdit for mac.

    it worked it worked I got rid of the stuff and copied straight into the style.css file on my FTP.

    Thank you so much for all your help!

    ...expect a new thread from me in the next 24 hours haha.
