   I was messing around in the admin panel , trying to change the header link address from my http://www.domainname.com/blog to the root to http://www.mydomainname.com

   anyway I changed the address in the first box of the admin links panel to
   http://www.mydomainname.com and saved it. now it doesn't load my theme or even let me login. I get a 404 error.

   I'm in some serious crap if I can't fix this quick. please tell me how to get to the login, or which file to replace it with (I have an outdated copy of the blog I think).

   Ok I can get to the login page now,
   I did this bit from the page you suggested in the wp-config.php file

   define('WP_HOME','http://example.com');
   define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com');

   but now my user name and password don't work, I tried resetting the password and using what it sends, but that doesn't work. should I be using the MySQL database username?? HELP !!

   Is there a config file I can just upload from my backup from a week ago to just get this whole thing behind me? please tell which file to replace.

   You should make sure that the wp_options in the database reflects the correct site url. This may seem slightly 'doh!' but did you move the installation into the proper folder the URL is pointing to?
