• I have inherited a site that was set up , it is all up to date using 3.6.1 with all plugins and themes up to date also , the allowance per month off our current host is 1.5 Tb which we are using at an alarming rate , we average 10,000 visitors a day on the site alone and the forum (the forum is phpBB) and doesn’t have any issue’s that I can see , the amount of local usage is constantly rising and i have contacted the hosts who gave the following reasons , can someone point me in the right direction please here are there comments ,

Me:- As our host’s can you please forward a breakdown of our usage as this is by no means normal traffic , were is all the usage going as there is nothing to download off our site , as its a read and post a comment only blog and forum , seem’s strange to me that we are getting once again to many connections when all connections go via your server and our own site stats say we are averaging 10,000 visits a day , hardly what i call an upsurge is it ??? thank you in advance .
Reply :- Please note that blogs can actually generate a lot of traffic (especially local), because your website scripts are constantly accessing the database and downloading different content, which after that is downloaded and seen by the site visitors. If you look at the traffic statistics page: (removed link)
you will notice that a lot of the traffic is exactly local. And when we add the web traffic generated by the site visitors we get the total traffic for your account.
Me:- “a lot of traffic (especially local)”, well what do you suggest in order to reduce this as the local usage is more than the out going , which unless you can tell us exactly why this is or what the cause is ie:- a faulty plugin or whatever the explanation is of little use is it ? , thank you
Reply:- We can see the queries to the database from your website, but there is no way for us to determine which script is running then, and whether they are supposed to be this way. You can speak with your website developer about optimization if your website in order to reduce the queries as whole, but frankly I am so sure if the developer will be able to do something to make a difference simply because your site is being accessed a lot by visitors.

I think he meant to say “frankly I am *not* so sure” , any help would be appreciated , thanks for your time and any replies .

    Hey,

Try running the site through pingdom tools to see what the breakdown of files and resource requests are like for your top content pages.

Look for long loading times of images or resources and take a note of the size being downloaded (times by 10,100 of course to get an average daily download size).

Also you may want to install P3 Profiler http://wordpress.org/plugins/p3-profiler/

It will give you stats on the site’s resources and can help identify those plugins which are making many requests.

Pay particular notice to the number of MySQL requests being made by each plugin.

Should at least get you some good metrics to guide your investigation.

Thankyou for your reply I see that the above plugin you mention is only compatible with and up to 3.5.2 where as i am running 3.6.1 , is there a later one or will it work on 3.6.1 and not cause me any more headaches , thanks in advance .

Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

I second that @esmi. You really need to be running the current version of WordPress.

    This may help you:

Lime? May I call you Lime? 😉 Please do not post links back to your site like that.

It’s just way to easy for that to be abused. You can easily convey that message in the forums without directing people to your site.

Also if you are running any version of WordPress and you want to be safe (safe is good) the try following these links.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

Store those file and database backups off of your server. If somehow something goes catastrophically bad then using that file and database backup you can restore all of it back to the way it was.

Thx for all the replies , were in the middle of moving hosts and will be installing the new wordpress , I inherited the site and I have no idea why that version was used but on the new hosts we will have the new version , as wordpress is all new to me I am grateful for your input , I have made backups , were still using a lot of GB’s on the local side and our hosts seem to think it’s the site content when all it is , is a blog and forum , they keep going on about external links to which I can only assume they mean Twitter / Facebook plugins or actual links posted on our site or forum to say a youtube video or someone else’s blog , anyway guess it will get sorted one way or the other .
