   The theme that I chose already has a home button on the menu and I'd like to remove that and the corresponding post page.

   I tried using the exclude page plugin but it seems to work only on static pages and not the post(home) page.

   How do I do this?

   Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but maybe you actually want to
   create a static front page?
