Hi, I just signed up with WordPress. I was looking at themes and wanted to customize one, to see if I could find a look I liked. The content for the site is still being prepared and I had a couple options I liked. However the only two choices were close or save and publish. I made the mistake of clicking save and publish and now I have a terrible looking largely blank wordpress page at my website where before my host had a coming soon page.

I cannot seem to find any option to hide my site until it is complete or to save a work in progress without publishing it. I want the semi-complete website hidden. My attempts at looking in the support area have yielded nothing. Is there a way to work on my site without displaying it to the world? Preferably I’d like a blank page at my domain until I’m ready to launch the site. I am a beginner when it comes to making a webpage.

  • When you say there were “only two choices” where were you seeing that? Was that through your host or through the WordPress admin section?

Also, who is your host and have you tried contacting them for help?

The easiest way that I can think of is to create an empty file called index.html and store it in the root directory of your web site. That should work because index.html will be displayed in place of index.php, which is what WordPress uses.

But a more basic question: you are not talking about wordpress.com, are you? If so, ignore what I said and go to the wordpress.com support forums at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/

    This is for wordpress.org

The two choices were at the dashboard. I clicked appearance and went to the themes tab. I clicked customize on my active theme and it brought me to a screen that told me I was previewing that theme and it allowed me to change some of it. At the top left were a ‘close’ button and a ‘save and publish’ button. I probably should not have hit the save and publish button.

I’m using inmotion hosting but I’ll try the index thing. The index.html seems to have worked. All I see is a blank page on my website now. Thank you both. I’m assuming I just delete that once I’m ready for people to see everything?

Yep, just delete the index.html file when you’re finished. Nice suggestion @jonradio.
