I'm probably missing something, but I can't find a way to restrict access to the archive page of a restricted category.

This is the scenario: I've a category "reserved Area" with a bunch of posts in it. I've totally restricted the category and then assigned the read capability to group of user.
Then I've added the category in the main menu and everything works fine: only users in the group above can see the link to the reserved area in the menĂ¹ and read its contents.
But I found that unregistered users also can view the archive page for the category "Reserved Area" and for all its subcategory. They cannot see any post, but they can read at least categories description.

Is there a way to return a 404 error for those archives to unautharized users?

    I'm using WP 3.5 and RS 1.3.59

Role Scoper only applies category read restrictions to the related posts, so you'll need to add some conditional code to your them. You could call get_categories() and then suppress the output if the current category was filtered out.
