• I am using the default ‘the_category’ & ‘wp_list_cats’ to display the categories used for my posts on both each individual post and the sidebar.

What I would like to do is be able to add a category or number of categories to certain posts but not have that category displayed at all on the page.

I can get round this on the sidebar using the exclude argument on the wp_list_cats tag but I can’t find a way to hide the category from displaying with the post.

I could possibly do it by using an if and then formatting the categories to be hidden to the same color text as the bacground but that would create a lot of whitespace.

Anyone got any ideas or could point me in the right direction please?

And just to clarify, I do not want to hide the actual post, just the category.

  • I don’t remember all the details but maybe this plugin does what you are after…

Thanks for the reply moshu. I have downloaded and tried topcat but unfortunately it only goes part of the way for what I want. If I only have one ‘main’ category for a post then it is ideal but I will sometimes have 2 or 3 ‘main’ cats that I don’t want to display. If I can find a way to change the radio buttons to check boxes then that may do it.

    Anyone else??

I don’t really understand your logic. With that plugin you can have posts in multiple categories, but you have the ability to display only one – as you described above. Why on the earth would you define more “main” categories if you want to display only one? The post still can be assigned to multiple categories: one main (or top) and the others “not-so-top”…
On the other hand, if you don’t want to display the post’s category (or categories) at all – remove the template tag.

Hi again. OK things have become confused. In my last post I used the terms from the Top Cat plug-in for my explanation. Each post I make will have multiple categories, each of which I would like to display with the post. Each post will also have at least one, maybe more, categories attached to it that I do not wish to have displayed with the post or in my category list in the sidebar.

I know I can exclude categories from the sidebar by using the exclude argument but I do not know how to exclude them from being displayed in the actual post. I hope that is clearer.

I am simply trying to group posts by certain categories for admin purposes.

This dropped down my priority list but with my new design I want to bring it back in. Anyone else? I have just had another look throught the support and can’t see anything.
