Help with setting this up please?

Hi I have read your documentation and never having used anything like this I am having some difficulty setting it up and would appreciate some insight.

What I am trying to achieve is to have a log-in form on my sidebar. Once a member who has a pre-assigned username and password enters their details they will be directed to a rosters page that is only accessible to people who have logged in.

Would you mind outlining the steps needed to do this. Thanks so much!
