   Is it possible to temporarily turn off a blog? If so, how? This is rather urgent. Thanks.

   Rename index.php or wp-config.php in the root directory of your WordPress installation. To turn it back on, just change the file's name to it's original name.

   I may not understand what you mean by "turn off". I guess one way to do it is to create a web page that says "sorry, blog temporarily unavailable" or something like that, and name it index.php. Then go to your ftp client, navigate to the folder of the theme you are using, change index.php in that folder to something else like indexhold.php, and upload your "new" index.php. Be sure you don't delete your original index.php or write over it, you'll need it back.

   Thank you very much - I meant to temporarily shut the whole thing done. I just found a plug-in at:

   http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/plugins/maintenance-mode/

   which works. I've got a couple of old MT blogs that housed archived copies of my WordPress blogs. For those, I changed the directory names of the server.

   Thanks again, this was rather urgent.
