Help setting up portfolio in WordPress site (1 post)

Hopefully this is the appropriate forum category for this particular post.
Also, sorry for the lengthy post. I wanted to make sure everything is clear, and as you can tell from the post I'm lost as to how to proceed in creating my goal.

I used WordPress to get my website set up and running quickly, and I am extremely pleased with the ease of use and results so far. However, I would like to do some customization to my site to allow me to create a simple and user-friendly way of displaying my portfolio, one which can hopefully allow for easy content addition in the future.

Let me start by showing and explaining what it is I hope to achieve. Here is a mockup of what I would like to do, and here is a breakdown of the pieces.
    - The red is the main content - if possible, I'd like to manage this with either individual WordPress posts or pages. I would like for this section to work with horizontal sliding panels.
    - The green sections denote left and right buttons to navigate the red sliding panels one by one.
    - The blue is a carousel of thumbnails, allowing for quicker navigation to specific content.

Hopefully my idea is clear enough, but I'd be happy to further explain if anything needs clarification. My main goal with this layout design is to provide easy navigation while allowing the main content to remain the center of focus on the page. A live example of what I would like to achieve can be seen on Panic's Coda page - the content in the center white box can be shifted, either by clicking on a specific link in the bar above, or by using the side navigation arrows to go through one by one. I also like the effect how if you click on say the last menu option while you are on the first panel, it quickly slides past all the other panels.

Now while I have a clear goal, I am somewhat at a loss as to how I should proceed to accomplish this. I have very little experience with web design – I created a few websites from scratch using GoLive and some basic HTML maybe five or six years ago. I've never used CSS or jQuery, which from my research it seems I'll need to use both to create this – I do have a good amount of free time in the next few weeks, and I am willing to learn some CSS or other language if needed. I have found a few examples of code to create sliding panels, using HTML, CSS and jQuery (such as this forum post), but I have no clue where I can plug the CSS and jQuery code into my WordPress site to make it function.

My main questions at this point are:
    - Are there any existing WordPress plugins or free themes that would let me achieve something close to what I would like to create? I have looked into a handful of plugins, but with no luck.
    - Are there any websites or other forums I could go to for more advice on how to create this?
    - Has anyone done something similar before within a WordPress site?

Thank you so much for any help or advice you can offer me. I have been scratching my head and running around in circles for the past few days simply trying to figure out how to start tackling this project. By now I am very eager to get started.
