    Hi Guys,

I've recently been blogging using Blogger, but I wish to upload my own files, such as shock wave files and I don't know how to that, or even if you can. I also like the look of WordPress and would like to start using it, however I am VERY unexperienced when it comes to Web Servers and having your own internet space.

I tried to follow the Documents, but I'm afraid that I don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to PHP's and MySQL's I have no idea what any of these things are or what they do? I'm not even sure what a server actually is!

I'm using a Windows computer. I was hoping if anyone could give me the steps I need to take in order to download WordPress and begin uploading files, such as what do I need to download, in what order and how do I get it to work.

Thank you, any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Tenacious Stu

Yeah, I read through the codex, but I don't understand a lot of it, I will give it another try though, thanks.

    [Additional]

so, I'm read through the codex and the first thing it says about is Web Hosting Provider, so if I have started a wordpress blog, http://www.myblog.wordpress.com.

so, would this mean that WordPress is my Web Hosting Provioder?

    Thanks

    Stu

that isn't my blog btw it was just an example.

I'm reading the codex at the point before installation, it tells me that I need

an FTP client - i downloaded filezilla so I think I have this
    a text editior - notepad
    web browser - internet explorer
access to your webserver via shell or FTP. Now, because I have filezilla does this mean that I have access? I have no idea how I would go about accessing it, or what my webserver is? Or if I even have one?

    [additional]

I downloaded WordPress and am now reading the read me, step 2 says I need to open wp-confing-sample.php with notepad, which I did. Now it says I have to fill in my database connection details, What Database?

    Thanks for any help,

    Stu

    ok
    any blog at
    whatever.wordpress.com
is free and already set up for you - just start posting

If you have purchased a domain name and a web hosting package, then you can ftp wordpress files to web host space, create a mysql database thru the web host and install the wordpress software

It's a matter of control really
If you don't mind a wordpress.com address and the limitations on themes and plugins and just want to blog - go for that.

If you want to do whatever you want with your blog - then you will need to make some purchases.

There are plenty of good and cheap webhosts and registrars - google around
