This is driving me absolutley crazy. I can't find a suitable image plugin to do this fairly straight forward task. I want to have images in a line with each other, and perhaps with caption text.

I've tried just about everything! http://www.obsessedwithfilm.com/the-dark-knight-2008/ is the page it is for.

I made an image of how I want it to look.

Your sounding mighty picky? Thumbs have to be 185px square, three in a row, then what? What do you want to happen when somebody clicks one of those thumbs? ...or are the thumbs simply links to albums?

There are four heavy hitter WordPress gallery plugins:
    Next Gen Gallery
    Photopress
Flicker Photo Gallery :: Store you photos and Flickr and save disk space. Gives five insert size choices when illustrating blog content. All album/photo management is done at Flickr.
Gallery2 :: Great for multi users. Been around the longest with the most extensive development.

Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Since they are all easy to upload and activate I suggest trying them all out to see which one will work the best for your exacting specifications.

For Next Gen Gallery display live example>>
For PhotoPress Gallery display live example>>
    For Gallery2 display live example>>

Judging by your page I expect you can take any one of the aforementioned gallery packages and edit its parameters to get exactly what you are looking for. I can't wait to see what you settle on so be sure to send me a link.

You can add a gallery that is not a plugin by creating a template page or simply managing your gallery off site then adding code to draw in the magic of your efforts. Consider:
    JAlbum at http://jalbum.net/
    SlideShowPro at http://www.slideshowpro.net/

Photopress seems great - well, I'm struggling to figure out something though. It says something about creating a page for the album and I am interested in seeing this - but it doesn't say what the URL for it is... anywhere. What is the URL?

I know I can add images to my page using the icon on the toolbar, but I would still like to see the album page.

One other gallery plugin not mentioned is mine. AWSOM Pixgallery which is available from the Extend area here at WordPress.org, or from my site http://www.awsom.org.

also check inline gallery; you can customize the output to suit your preference, and it's rather easy to set up and get started
