Read up here Joen has done some research into it. I currently use Photostack and love it, although there is no comment system.

There is a list on the wiki with many different solutions.

this is perhaps one of the biggest requests for WP with regards to galleries, what's good what isn't, what's sutiable for x, y and z, what's supported and what isn't.

never heard of photostack so gonna check that out - i think ease of integration and some automation are the biggest gallery requests.

I started with gallery and coppermine, and overall both were just too bloated with features for what I wanted. With photostack, you just upload a folder of images and you're done. The thumbnails are automatically created. It does not use a db though, however in my experience with it so far this has not been a problem. And templating with it is incredibly easy. I didn't call my WP header and footer directly, rather just copy and pasted the code in, but I'm sure it would not be very difficult to accomplish.

Otherwise if comments are desired, 4Images, of which a demo can be found At digicam.co.za also looks like a good solution.

amory, the only problem I had with your photography was the complete rewriting of the whole page.

While the transitions were nice and smooth in the javascript, it doesn't sooth the pain of a redraw everytime you click an image.

Otherwise, I'm thorougly impressed with the integration photostack allows for.

After trying out a few php based galleries, I'm going to stick to http://www.zenphoto.org.
