Help! I have NO idea what I'm doing. (7 posts)

Okay, so first, I have a Mac (OS 10.6.8). I downloaded WP and it unzips automatically, so in my downloads folder I have wordpress.zip as well as a folder titled wordpress that is full of what are mostly .php files and a couple folders here and there. I don't know what it means when the instructions say to unzip the file in a certain place.
So it's on my computer and now I have NO idea what to do with it. I have no idea how to get access to my web server or how to use an FTP. I have no idea how to use a shell. All I know is that I have a domain name that I've purchased and now I would like to use comicpress with it and that I can't use comicpress until I have wordpress. I don't know how to make all of these .php documents magically become a website.

Is there someone who can actually walk me through what to do? Because, for me, the instructions are not actually very clear at all. It might be great if we all had universal computers and spoke computer-language ,but we don't. I would love it if the website (or anyone) could actually walk me through the process slowly. I want very much to learn what to do, but nothing I'm finding on the web is helping very much.

when you paid for your domain, did you also pay for web hosting? If not you need to get a hosting account.

Oh. Okay, I don't have a hosting account. Maybe that's the issue....
Does it matter who I get my hosting from?

Yes - they're not all the same. I think you probably want to find a hosting company with good support, so it may be worth sending out a few pre-sales enquiries to some hosting companies to see how they respond. Unfortunately we don't permit hosting recommendations on the forums as those posts would tend to attract spam, however there are a few hosting companies listed at http://wordpress.org/hosting/ but there are plenty of other good ones.

Main thing is to find a web host that keeps on top of WordPress upgrades. The recommended suppliers are Mainly based in the US, but there are good ones in Canada as well. If you are handy with ftp the support is somewhat irrelevant. Mainly it helps on inital setup.
