HELP! How can I get WP to do this? I know it can... (4 posts)

    Fair warning -- I'm a WP newbie so bear with me. I have it up and running fine, I'm just getting a MAJOR brain cramp trying to figure out how to get it to do what I want. ANY help will be greatly appreciated! Here's what I'd like to do:

    First off, I'm NOT using WP as a blog, I'm using it for articles, tips and guides that I'd like categorized like this:

    Articles Main
    --> Article Subcategory
    ---> Actual article

    That work's out of the box pretty much, but then I when I try to get those pages to behave like I want, I get really lost. Here's what I'm after:

    Articles Main - On this page I would like to have unique text introducing all the articles, plus automatically include links to the all the article subcategories. I prefer these links to be right in the body of the document. No other navigation is needed here.

    Article Subcategories - On this page I would like to have unique text introducing the articles in this category, plus automatically include links to all the articles in this section. I prefer these links to be right in the body of the document. In addition, I would like right hand navigation to all article categories and subcategories.

    Actual Articles - Article text plus right hand navigation to all article categories and subcategories.

    Also important -- I have other sections/categories like this articles example that I need to behave in the same way, BUT obviously the text that is unique to each category would be different as would the right hand navigation.

    Is it possible to do this? If so, can anyone offer some pointers? I really lost...TIA!

    >Is it possible to do this?

    You mean like this (non-blog) FAQ?

    iDVD UOFAQ

    All WP 1.5 'pages' - static links in the body and live links in the sidebar.

    My site is WordPress and totally like what you are requesting.

    Styling categories differently:
    I'd start with this thread http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=25522 which is a "lesson" in styling The WordPress Loop and contains an example of how to customize categories. Then I'd go through the following:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=25166
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=24988
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=20048
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=22567

    Understanding the is_ functions:
    http://boren.nu/archives/2004/10/16/templates-and-the-is-functions/

    Restructing category pages to show only specific categories:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=25719

    Changing category order by ID: http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=24993

    And then, like me, spend your next few days or weeks living in the WordPress Codex at http://codex.wordpress.org/ especially with the Template Tags.

    It is all possible, but you have to make a few sacrifices. Take a moment to check out my different categories on my site at http://www.cameraontheroad.com and see how each category is "different" to help you understand this a little more.

    thanks for the help, but I'm afraid going this route isn't possible for me right now as it would take too much time that I don't have. however, this is a big help because I will be going this route once I have some free time.

    So, I've now tried to keep it simple, but still have some problems...hopefully more minor :) if interested you can check it out at http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=30112#post-170192
