Help displaying a sum of the custom field values.

I write posts about tips and deals to save people money. I would like to include a specific dollar amount saved in each post and then add these amounts up and display a total on my home page. I know how to create the custom field and display that specific value on each post but I do not know how to add them, where to input that code specifically, and how to display the total. Please help.
