    I am brand new at this so explain things very simply please!

    i've created a website and for some reason there are two heading that i don't want and i cannot figure out how to get rid of them. when i click on them they lead me to a thumbnail version of the photo i have on my static page. i think they have something to do with categories but i've erased all categories and the headings are still there. any ideas?

    Ok, here goes.
    2010 is an archive link (there is an archive because there is a post existing).
    Photo is a category link. Actually it is your cat=1, the default Uncategorized which you cannot remove (because WordPress always needs on category).

    Probably you made a post in an own category, removed that category and WordPress automatically moved that post to the default category.

    Now delete that one post through your Dashboard and (I guess) you will be fine.

    make a backup copy before editing

    when you edit header.php of your theme, in line 96 you'll find:

    <?php wp_list_categories('exclude=&title_li=' );?>

    <?php wp_get_archives('type=yearly'); ?>

    edit these lines to:

    <?php // wp_list_categories('exclude=&title_li=' );?>

    <?php // wp_get_archives('type=yearly'); ?>

    that 'comments' the functions and stops them from showing the category button and archive button in your navigation.
