[resolved] Have WP Account, Bought Hosting / Domain...How to Merge? (4 posts)

    Hi guys,

So I'm trying to start a blog...here is what I've done so far:

    1. Registered a blog / account with WP (Enfinitx).
    2. Purchased the "Pro Bundle"
    3. Logged in and posted a post. (Awesome!)
    4. Purchased a domain and hosting through DreamHost
    5. Installed WordPress on my domain through DreamHost.
    6. Created a username and password on the Dreamhost page.
    7. Arrived at Enfinitx.com with my DH username / a blank blog.
    8. ??

I'm somewhat confused on how to tie my WP account together with my DH account (and domain). Do I need to follow these steps: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

ALSO - once I map (link?) the two together, will WordPress know to store all of my stuff on my DH hosting account? Videos, pictures, etc.?

I'm just confused on how the two all play nice together, and what exactly the "installation" was on my DH domain.

    Thanks!
    Mike

Self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) is not the same as WordPress.com

    See http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for an explanation.

If you want to self-host (have everything stored on you purchased hosting) you do not need the WordPress.com account, you just need to make sure you have the domain pointing to your hosting and install WordPress see http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress

If instead, you just need what the WordPress.com account offers and want to use that, you do not need the separate hosting account and you would link your domain to your WordPress account following WordPress.com's instructions. In that case you can get further support from the good people over at http://en.support.wordpress.com/

I hope this helps to clarify things for you

    Ooooohhhhh.....shoot.
Yes, it makes sense. Thank you.

So basically just take off and run with my own personal domain / WP install. The "accounts" I make on that setup are within a "walled garden" of sorts, very specific to my site...and won't actually mean anything outside of my own .com.

As for my WP.com account and the $99 Pro Bundle....I guess I'll chalk that up to a leaner's fee. o_O
