• We have > 50,000 posts on our site and as a result our sitemap is quite large.

Have you considered splitting the sitemap into multiple files and / or providing a gzip version of the sitemap?

  • I have considered it but it will need a considerable effort to implement it properly.

The whole concept of the plugin is to NOT create physical files so gzipping can only be done on the fly by your server. Splitting the sitemap up can be done but has other disadvantages like needing an xml sitemap index feed of considerable calculations in the robots.txt generation…

So at this point, the single xml sitemap provided by XML Sitemap Feed is limited ot 50.000 urls and it leaves gzipping to the server. For a site of 50.000 plus posts (and if you really want them ALL to be submitted via the xml sitemap) you will need to switch to another sitemap plugin.
