I wrote up a useful guide to upgrading WordPress in a slightly faster fashion. The combination of uploading just two zipped files and extracting them with the cPanel File Manager ought to be a real time saver.
Read the guide on my blog: http://www.nyceducated.info/blog/internet/easy-wordpress-updates-with-cpanel-and-smartftp/
dunno. i just upload the folder as it is using filezilla and run upgrade.
i used to use smartftp but their queue feature and file overwriting thing messed up things for me. filezilla has been perfect for me to overwrite old files with new ones using a queue. which is important considering the net connectivity we got here in india.
cpanel is not user installable. its something you chose when u pick a webhost. or a dedicated server. u just cannot install on your server if it is using some other control panel. i prefer directadmin personally.
