[resolved] Gravatar Will Not Verify WP (18 posts)

    Gravatar says,

"It looks like you don't have the XML-RPC API enabled in WordPress, or perhaps the website located at http://www.amancooks.com/wp/ isn't powered by WordPress. Please log into your WordPress admin panel, then go to Settings > Writing > Remote Publishing and check the box next to 'Enable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols."

This, of course, is not true. I have a WP site and the API is enabled. No gravatars for me today!

    Anybody know anything about this?

    Thanks...

Where do you see this message?

Do you mean that when people comment on your blog their Gravatars show up?

Typo - I meant "their Gravatars don't show up"

    How to See the Message

1.) Go to the Gravatar site. Log in to your account.
2.) Go to My Account | Edit My Profile | Verified Services
3.) Select WordPress from the dropdown list
4.) Input your WP site name, your WP Admin Login ID, and your PW.
5.) Press Verify. Maybe you will see the error message I have quoted above. Or maybe not.

As a result, there will be no Gravatar avatars (what a mouthful) on your WP site.

Is this a 3.2.1 issue? Or does it possibly have something to do with me trying to migrate from dev to production?

I have seen a couple of other posts with the same problem.

This process is not necessary for what you're trying to do.

If your theme is coded correctly to include Gravatars, they will show up automatically in comments if individuals have set up their own Gravatar accounts.

Have a look - I just let you a test comment and you can see my Gravatar is showing correctly.

    Hope this helps!

    Zoonini,

Thank you for helping me test this. You have demonstrated that your Gravatar icon can appear on my site. Alas, you have not explained my Gravatar error message. You have not explained why my own gravatar will not appear on my own site, either localhost or remotely hosted.

I go to certain sites and I find this feature is working. I go to other sites and I find this feature is inoperative. I search for help on this issue and I find unanswered queries.

Any help at all would be valued.

    Thanks.

Alas, you have not explained my Gravatar error message.

The Gravatar verification process is to prove your own identity. The information they are asking for in relation to WordPress is for WordPress.com accounts. You are running a self-hosted WordPress blog. The two are unconnected.

You have not explained why my own gravatar will not appear on my own site, either localhost or remotely hosted.

You must not have set up your Gravatar correctly. Have you uploaded an image of yourself at Gravatar.com, connected it to your email address, verified that email address, and then added a comment with that email address on a Gravatar-enabled site?

I go to certain sites and I find this feature is working. I go to other sites and I find this feature is inoperative.

Not all blogs or themes support Gravatars.

Here is a tutorial on how to set up your Gravatar:

Perhaps my question has been too general.

I use the WP 2010 theme (the style.css anyway), and the bbPress 2010 theme.

Since these are pretty much WP standards, I would assume Gravatars work OK with these themes. Am I mistaken?

OR -- Perhaps I am not asking my question clearly enough.

I want Gravatars (my own included) and even hovercards - to function on my site.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks

    Correct, your theme supports Gravatars.

I want Gravatars (my own included) and even hovercards - to function on my site.

They do function - which is what I tried to show with my little demo earlier. ;-)

Are you saying that when you add a comment to your own site your own Gravatar is not showing up as expected? If so, that means something went wrong when you set up your Gravatar over at gravatar.com.

When you comment on your blog, are you filling out the email address you registered at gravatar.com in the email form field? They need to match for your Gravatar to show up.

Yes, that's right. My own Gravatar does not appear on my own site. I had to install a plugin to get an avatar to show up.

Please note that both my gravatar and my hovercard work perfectly on this site. My Gravatar acct. had no email address assigned to it at all.

Please also note that with no email address defined in my Gravatar acct., I was still able to verify FaceBook, G+, LinkedIn and Twitter.

    This is my Gravatar profile.
    ..............................

So, I went to my amancooks.com WP user profile and double-checked my email address (I don't need to enter it when I post, I'm the admin). Then I went to Gravatar and entered the exact same email address in my contact info. Then I tried to verify my site again. Again I got the error message about the API.

I can see your Gravatar just fine on my site. I can see my own Gravatar just fine on other sites. I can't see my own Gravatar on my own site.

    Thanks

You must to assign an email address to your Gravatar in your Gravatar account under Manage Gravatars, and confirm it after receiving the confirmation email from Gravatar.

    See also these troubleshooting suggestions:

    Gravatar FAQ
    - "My gravatar doesn’t show up on a particular site!"
    - I’m trying to implement gravatar for my site, and some gravatars aren’t displaying!

    > (I don't need to enter it when I post, I'm the admin).

Make sure the email address in your user profile is the exact email associated with your Gravatar account, including capitalization.

Try logging out and leaving yourself a comment.

If you're still completely stuck you can try contacting Gravatar: support at gravatar dot com

This looks promising. It never occurred to me that Gravatar might have multiple locations for entering email addresses. Swell UI. I went to Manage Gravatars, rather than the Gravatar Profile, and added my email address.
    ..................................
Well, I sure got results on the Gravatar Manager. The new email address is now attached to my avatar image. Confirmation email has arrived. Attempts to "verify" my site continue to get bogus error message.
    ..................................

Deactivated Simple Local Avatar plugin. Deleted my local avatar image. Went to Discussion Settings and set default avatar to Blank. Made two replies to your test message. Cleared browser cache and reloaded. Result = I have no avatar. Yours and one other Gravatar image displays properly.
    ................................

I'm not even going to ask about hovercards.
    Thanks for your help.

  15. Hovercards would be done via Jetpack or some similar plugin.

But. As you can tell by your posts here, your email address doesn't have a gravatar associated with it :) So that's probably all that's going on here. Except ... http://wordpress.org/support/profile/eddieg shows YOUR gravatar. So does http://www.amancooks.com/wp/stupid-food-tricks/#comments

It may be a gravatar caching issue.

There's no 'site verification' for Gravatar, because it's not SITE based but ID based. All that's on your site is a call to gravatar.com 'Does this email have a gravatar? Yes? Display! No? Booo!'

OK people. I got Gravatar icons now! This turned out to be a (user related) Gravatar configuration issue. Who would have guessed that when you install a new Gravatar email address the icon defaults to NOTHING instead of the only image available. Man, these turkeys even work on my local machine now! Hot Damn!

Now that you've helped me iron this out, I expect hovercards will fall easily into place.

    Thanks for your time.
