   I've double checked my "discussion" settings and all should enable an avatar to show.

   Just upgraded to 2.8, could this be the issue?

   Please help, any feedback would be appreciated!

   Looks like your theme simply doesn't show gravatar images. Edit comments.php and look for <?php wp_list_comments();?>. If you can't find that template tag, then it confirms that you're using an older theme that may not be gravatar enabled.
