GPL Forum Integration Advice Sought

Greetings. Sorry if this is a bit off topic for a Plugins and Hacks forum, but it as I am looking to make WordPress play nice with a GPL Forum, I thought that the code tweaking people who frequent this section would be the best to advise me.
So, it’s a simple question really: which GPL forum do y’all like?
PHPbb looks very nice to me, and I like they’re philosophy and the look of the forum. However, before I go in deep and customize their CSS to fit my site, maybe some of you who have used PHPbb with WordPress have some comments.
This forum runs on Minibb, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are advocates for it as well. I want a robust forum with a pleasant interface, features that are totally customizable (I would want to turn off a lot of extraneous shit!), and free, free, free. Any other forum recomendations and pro/con discussions would be also very welcome. What about WordPress plugins that make integration a cinch?

Personally, I loathe phpBB. See, I’m a Windows server user, and phpBB is a pale shadow of the Snitz forum under ASP.
I would suggest looking at a lighter-weight forum. punbb looks good. Minibb is probably also a good choice. I suggest a lighter-weight forum because it should conceivably be easier to make changes to it. I’ve seen phpBB code, and it doesn’t please me.
There’s my six cents. Now everyone else can contradict me.
