Does the gpl permit me to remove the copyright that appears at a page? I don't mean in the code or something, just on the output, after I edited the template.
Eg I see no copyright at the bottom of this forum, which is gpl also.
ps: I do bring credit on my thanks page, but that's probably quite different?

Check the requirements of the program's author. It'll usually be in a readme.
WP does not require the visible linking and it GPL. Other GPL programs I use do require that a link remains.
I think that credit should be given where due regardless of the gpl or other terms, and that a Thanks page is cool too :)
