GPL Allows me to modify a Plugin and Redistribute? (4 posts)

I have some great ideas to extend and significantly add features to an existing plugin. I'm not talking about a few changes, I'm talking about making the plugin significantly more useful to users.

My question is with the GPL license and just plugin development ethics. Can I use the existing plugin code as a base to start my plugin with the GPL license? Also, I'm new to plugin development so how is that seen in the community. Is it something I can make a reference to the developer's code I used to start my plugin?

    Thanks.

You can do it..... there are many plugins here that are based on others.

It would be nice if you noted that it started as/was based on another plugin. Especially if you keep large portions of the code.

    Not necessary, but nice

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I'm not just looking to make someone's exact functionality my own, I want to expand upon it so this is good to know.

    Thanks.

You just have to keep the GPL license, which means anyone can modify and distribute your version as well. Otherwise GPL is essentially worthless. :)
