• I’m having a strange issue. If I do a search on Google for a term I know to be on a client WP blog, the post shows up in Google, but produces a 404.

The urls in google are odd.
    Instead of
    clientdomain.com/archive/post-title.php
    is has things like
    clientdomain.com/m289.html

What is that about??? Any clues much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • If there have been any recent URI changes, it can take Google a little bit of time to propagate those changes.

From my own experience, in the 10 minutes between importing entries from another platform and turning off the ping feature, Google had managed to index them all, so I had to request that the URI’s for those pages be removed as I was just starting to tinker with it and it wasn’t meant to be seen.

I’m not sure if either of those are the case now. I’m also not 100% sure if the 404 error from with-in WordPress sends the proper header, in many cases it does, but it seems on some (even WP 2.0.1) that even though WordPress will display the 404 template, it still sends the 200 OK header, leaving the search engines thinking everything is OK.

    Good luck,
    Michael.

D’oh… yup stupid mistake… didn’t realise that client had taken existing content, ported to WP and deleted original pages. The original page names were so bizarre I thought something odd was going on. Wood for trees, late night etc etc…
    Thanks!
