• New here and not tech savvy so have patience! I’ve read on this forum that you should NEVER alter the Twenty Eleven theme because it may screw up any future updates. Makes sense. But is it OK to add Google Analytic code (and Amazon Associates) directly into the theme editor, or should I use a plug-in instead? Or should I add the code directly to the header.php file through my FTP?

I’ve already added the codes to my theme editor but wondering if I should take them out and start again. But, if I keep them in and there’s an update for Twenty Eleven, will it screw things up? Could I take the code out of theme editor, update Twenty Eleven and then add them back in?

What are the pros and cons to my system?

Thanks for the help. I’ve found this forum to be very useful for a newbie such as myself.

  • If you’re using the twenty eleven theme, adding the code to the theme editor or directly to the header.php file using FTP are the same thing as altering the twenty eleven theme directly.

Meaning that when you update WordPress, you might lose all those changes.

Use a plugin or create a child theme.
