   Hello.

   I am about to build a site for a friend. I have purchased hosting from GoDaddy.com which I have not yet configured because step three of that process asks for a domain name. I don't want to key in the domain name yet because an old version of the site already exists and I want to make the switch only when the site is completely built using WordPress. (Sort of a grand reveal-type situation.)

   My questions are as follows:

   1) How do I get my hands on a temporary IP url or similar in order to build the site, and do I do this before I configure the settings of the hosting? (Note: I have some domains hanging which I'm not using, so I could use one of those temporarily if you think that's better/easier).

   2) How do I make the switch from that temporary url to the permanent domain when the time comes? What information should I ask my friend for in order to do this?

   i would greatly appreciate some help in this regard. The GoDaddy support is very difficult to navigate for a newbie like me (or anyone, I'm guessing).

   Note: I have some domains hanging which I'm not using, so I could use one of those temporarily if you think that's better/easier

   this would certainly be easier
   just install wp in a test folder - like
   http://example.com/test
   (when the installer runs be sure and set it not to be indexed by search engines)
   tweak your install and when ready to go live
   http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

   then visit
   admin - settings - privacy
   set your site to be indexed by search engines

   I have another query about this. Just want to make sure I'm not going to mess it up!

   Ok, so I now have a temporary domain, lets call it temporary.com/test with hosting and WordPress assigned to it (and running without any difficulty).

   Now, let's say I have finished building the site at temporary.com/test and I want to change it to permanent.com. Do I have to buy new hosting for pemanent.com? I have looked at http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress and it seems as if you need to move it from one WordPress site to another. I just want to change the domain name of the site. Could you explain what I have to do more simply? Sorry for being so basic about this!
