GoDaddy Killed My Ability to Upload Photos (5 posts)

    I got an email from Godaddy saying they would be moving my web site from one server to another. Ever since then I cannot upload photos from within WordPress. I can still FTP the photos to the folder and the path is still the same. Godaddy support is usually quite good but they have been useless so far. This is the actual error:

    “biketosymphony.gif” has failed to upload due to an error
    Unable to create directory D:\Hosting\5305676\html/wp-content/uploads/2011/2011/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

    I assume I am not the only one to experience this. Any suggestions?

    Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

    @esmi - It looks like this is a Windows server (based on the file path). Will chmod still work? Is there a different way to adjust file permissions on a Windows server?

    @esmi, thank you.

    At GoDaddy I was on a Windows server, working with the permissions was a nightmare, working with GoDaddy support was even worse. They have awesome customer service, until you have an actual problem. Once I got the picture posting problem solved I was still unable to update WP and do other things. Even worse my site started going down and timing out. My traffic was down by 50% because of this and GoDaddy kep blaming ME for the time outs.

    I solved ALL my problems by leaving GoDaddy for HostGator. And I'm now on a Linux server. I am one happy blogger again.

    Chris,

    I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I wish I had come across this thread when it was originally posted - I would have made the simple recommendation to switch to one of our Linux hosting plans. As most other users on this forum would tell you, you will generally get better performance and fewer headaches with WordPress (and often PHP in general) with a Linux plan. And, as Curtiss suggested, working with permissions is also more straight forward - it does sound like all your issues were related to permissions trouble.

    I'm posting here now in case anyone else should come across the thread. Please note that if you are using a GoDaddy.com Windows hosting plan and would like to switch to Linux, the migration process is fairly trivial from the customer's point-of-view. This is a quick guide to take you through the process step-by-step: http://x.co/a05o

    Should you ever decide to give Go Daddy hosting another shot, I'd love to hear about it. If you're so inclined, I'm directly accessible on Twitter with the username @GoDaddy.
