   Hey

   Help on this would be appreciated.

   Someone has rated and commented on our new plugin. They have rated it 1 star but their comment tells me that they can't possibly have tried the plugin they rated or commented on.

   They mention a feature which the plugin is not planned to have for another couple of weeks, "featured images". They claim it is applying the wrong thumbs too posts, but there is no interface in the plugin to allow featured images to be applied.

   I really want this removed. It is damaging and I'm worried it is trolling. It is the second strange comment like it on this plugin.

   It is not the first time it is happened to my teams plugins. Comments which talk about things the plugin does not even offer because the person posting the comment assumes the plugin will have the feature like similar plugins of its kind. Its almost like, lazy trolling or something I don't know I don't really get it. All I know is that it damages the reputation of the plugin based on nonsense.

   One of colleagues plugins was rated 10 times in the space of an hour, yes you guessed, one stars. Total of 15 ratings over 1 month.

   Can such posts and ratings be undone?

   The plugin in question just now is WordPress CSV Importer, the official author is Zara Walsh.

   I don't think a post will be deleted, I think you have adequately addressed the issue the OP raises in the thread you mention.

   Perhaps a mod can advise?

   We don't delete threads for that.

   Mistakes happen, handle the correction with maturity and professionalism and carry on :)

   Its not mistakes that concern me. It is trolling and plugin authors have little or no protection against it.

   Trolling we do delete, but honest mistakes we don't. Reading that short remark in the other thread, it does not strike me as a troll (and yes, I spend a lot of time sorting that out here ;) ). The comment is incorrect, based on what your plugin does, but even if I did delete it (which I won't), it won't change the vote.

   By the way, that's an unprovable accusation you made, that they down-voting your plugin. I don't have any access to that system any more than you, but I know that we have a one account, one vote code set up. You can't prove they gave you 1-star, and neither can I, so on the scale of reactions, yours is a little closer to bad behavior than theirs :) If they repeat the behavior, then we come back and have a sit down. Otherwise, well, if you can't accept the fact that people are going to be wrong once in a while, you're gonna have a bad time in any forum.

   I get what your saying about the rating but I wouldn't say such a thing without having a pretty good idea that it was the same person.

   I was on the pages not long before the comment and had seen the rating before it was changed. I would easily bet thousands of my own cash that it was the same person.

   Overall I'm just interested in what goes on behind the scenes in terms of moderating and policy.

   A lot of headaches is what goes on! :D

   We talk on the wp-forums email list, and there's make.wordpress.org/support which we just started. We're kind of trying to sort out the best direction for the supporters and then come back around and wrangle the users. It's a lot of chaos right now.

   I was sort of guessing that, some tell tale signs of big changes coming.

   Something I raised was the possibility of authors being able to put their plugin on the repository in a beta state. Everything being the same other than the plugins forum and ratings applying to the plugin while in beta status only. So when the author removes the beta status, the forum and rating is either reset or separate. I tried putting "BETA" on plugins and people still rate them, despite also displaying messages that the plugin is on here to encourage testing.

   I think its fair to ask that people don't rate software during such a period. Maybe some would disagree but I would like just a little more control.

   As for users, they could opt out of beta status plugins when searching for them. Then obviously some people would search for beta only out of interest.

   My point, before I forget, is that my plugin would possibly be in such a beta state right now. Maybe until the end of the year even, just so the long term stats have a chance. I'm always keen to get plugins on this forum during beta phase, it always works out great other than ratings and comments on the forum which I feel have long term effect.

   Anyway, keep up the excellent work and thank you very much for your comments.

   If I see a pattern of fake ratings or troll accounts used for fake ratings, or something like that, then I will take action and delete them.

   However, I see no such pattern here. Somebody rating your plugin badly, even if they misunderstand it, doesn't invalidate the rating.

    I'll flip that the other way :)

    If your plugin isn't ready to go, if it's not something that you want people downloading and using, don't publish it. You can be working on your beta/dev version in trunk and have a working version up in the stable tag to avoid people having this sort of issue. The repository is for working plugins, not development ones.
