getting new host, changing server only (8 posts)

    Hi,

I will be changing my hosting provider in the next couple of days and have some questions about the process and what I need to do. I will have to move everything over to a new server, right? I have downloaded the .sql wordpress database from cPanel, because I think I'll need that. What exactly will I need to do though? Like, how do I go in and change my server address? Will the hosting provider assign a new user name and password to use in my FTP client? And then how and what do I upload to the new server—the .sql database and/or other files, too?

I am not changing my domain name.

    Caleb

Yes, I've read that page about five times now.

And then finally saw the part where it says "Note: If you are changing to a new server but same domain, all you need to do is edit wp-config.php and upload everything as it is to your new server." But what about the wp-config.php do I edit? Shouldn't I have to enter the new server address somewhere, too? And again, what exactly am I uploading?

But what about the wp-config.php do I edit?

It is more than likely that your database name, user, password and/or database host will change after the move. So you will need to amend these in wp-config.php for the new host.

And again, what exactly am I uploading?

A new copy of WordPress, your theme(s), your plugins & your images. Plus you'll need to restore the .sql backup into the new database.

so don't worry about the server address?
and where do I restore the .sql?

PS. thanks for your help, btw. I really am appreciating this.

so don't worry about the server address?

Not the web server, no. That's covered by your domain name & the new host's name servers - although you may have to wait for up to 72 hours for the domain name to propagate to the new host fully.

and where do I restore the .sql?

Feel free to post in the forums if you have any problems. There's usually someone around who can help.

Good luck with the move :-)
