Does it do that after “Filesystem backup complete”? Check the event log to see what the last event is before it fails

Hi, here’s what it says:
Backup starting…
Initialisation completed.
(then over 4 hours later)
The backup cannot proceed any further due to an unknown problem. Please visit the Help & Support section for information on where to find help.
Hi LKR,
Thanks. Can you uninstall and install this version:
https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/wponlinebackup-638-tracing.zip
Will need to configure the plugin again but it will produce a trace file. If you reproduce problem until backup fails, you can go to Help & Support. If you can provide information there, and also right-click “Download trace.log file here:” link and “Save Target As / Download linked File” etc. it will download the trace.log to your computer.
Please then right-click the downloaded file and “Send to -> Compressed zip file” (Windows) or right-click “Compress” (Mac). Then please email that compressed file to support “at” backup-technology.co.uk
We’ll then investigate the cause.
Thanks,
Jason

Hi, do you mean uninstall the existing tracing plugin I have or uninstall every back-up plugin that’s installed?
Hi, I mean to uninstall the existing tracing plugin and use this newer one.
Thanks.

Hi, I tried doing this – sent the email – but was referred back to here.
Regards,
Ross.
Hi Ross,
It’s probably because you didn’t put anything in the email to say what it was.
I’ve found it though and I think I’ve plugged the problem. Can you try this version?
http://wordpress.org/plugins/wponlinebackup/developers/
It’s safe to keep using this version too and it doesn’t generate any log files (it will become 3.0.5 in due time). If we get any other issues we can investigate separately, using a newer log file version if we need to.

Jason

Thanks Jason, gave that a go but still not completing; how can I get the new error log to you?
Regards,
Ross.
Hi Ross,
Please try this newer one and get a log again to me:
https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/plugin/wponlinebackup-719-tracing.zip
Mention “Jason” and drop a link to this topic. It’ll get through then.
Thanks,
Jason

Thanks Jason, getting a 403 when I click the link, though.

Sorry Ross, you should be able to download it now.

Thanks, email sent, Jason.
Hi,
The trace log you sent shows a Filesystem operation failed. Maybe due to space (the database was 92MB dump and it needed to compress it, and that’s when it failed). It tries to compress to a tmp folder and I think it was too big to do it.
Did you get the unknown error at all because I couldn’t see that in the log?

Hi Jason,
No, I didn’t catch the error – where can I find it?
Regards,
Ross.
Hi LKR,
If the backup finished with “The backup failed due to an unknown error”, then that’s the log we would like to investigate. The one you sent had a different error, “A filesystem operation failed” – we believe this to be related to the database being too big to compress to /tmp.
If you get unknown error again, email the trace.log.
For the filesystem operation, the trace won’t usually help us as the error message is detailed enough. We have some experimental stuff that works well around these filesystem errors in /tmp but not ready for release. We also have a tweak coming that might help but it will be a week or two at least.
Regards,
Jason
