get_links and displaying name and description as alt text

Hi, I’m using images to link to all the sites on my various links categories, but I can’t work out a way to do what the title says! Also, I believe without an alt text on an image my xhtml won’t validate?

Is there anyway to amend or adjust the links.php or the tag get_links tag itself to enable this? I’ve had a look through all the stuff I can find about the links tags on the codex and can’t seem to track down a solution.
