   Holy Moley ... you guys may know this already but I just found out that get_categories('parent='.$cat_id) is 100 (exaggeration) times faster than get_category_children($cat_id)

   Test for your self, sped up my site and now it loads under a second, before it was taking 15-20 seconds

   Oh by the way I have 400-500 categories and adding more everyday. This may be why get_category_children($cat_id) doesn't load very fast.
