I have categories that go three levels deep. When doing a search I only want to show the top level category of a post because the rest is just for navigation purposes. How do I do that?

I have categories that go three levels deep. When doing a search I only want to show the top level category of a post because the rest is just for navigation purposes. How do I do that?
