   I am searching a way to get the most reccent posts from my wordpress multisite network with their author's avatar and display it in the main blog.Can this be solved only with buddypress?

   No, there's quite a handful of plugins & methods to do this. you might actually have to add in the bit to grab the avatar, but that's maybe a couple lines of code.

   I had the same issue and Diamond multisite widget works perfectly for this purpose in WP 3.0.1
