I'm just wondering if there's any way to get around the PHP safe mode, so I can use the automatic upgrade when I upgrade my plugins (it's sooooo tedious to do it via ftp every time!). My webhost wont turn it off, and I don't really feel like changing. So is there any smart fix?

For automatic upgrade, I don't think you need a PHP safe mode...
