    Have you upgraded to WordPress 3.5? Thumbnail generating doesn't work at all with the current version of the plugin with WordPress 3.5. If you're on an older version of WordPress, can you send me a link to the video?

    Hi Kyle,

    I'm using WP 3.3.1. Here is the link to the video http://thestockfootagecompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Traffic_china_handan.mov

    The missing thumbnail can be found in this url. http://thestockfootagecompany.com/products/ the one with no thumbnail was the result of the issue.

    On my server I was able to make one thumbnail out of that video before ffmpeg choked, but the main problem is that it's a ProRes file. I only support working with web formats. My guess is it takes too much memory for ffmpeg to seek through a file like that. If you had a ton of RAM on your server it might be able to pull it off but I can't say for sure. Try generating only one thumbnail and check the "force first frame" checkbox. That way ffmpeg only has to decode the first frame.

    I tried using the force first frame but it never showed me generated image. I'll try to increase the wordpress memory limit may be this will also help?

    Sorry, I made the mistake of testing this on a beta version of my plugin that for unrelated reasons could only generate one thumbnail. I was actually able to generate thumbnails without any trouble on my server. I'm stumped. Are you getting any error messages in your logs?

    Hi Kyle,
    I got this error message.
    [Mon Jan 21 20:50:11 2013] [error] [client 112.204.142.126] Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from '/home/tsfc/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Traffic_china_handan.mov':, referer: http://thestockfootagecompany.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=392&tab=gallery

    I also increase the memory limit of 1800MB and no improvement.

    I see. So FFMPEG is able to generate the thumbnails, but my guess is the PHP script is timing out because that error message isn't indicating that there's actually anything wrong with FFMPEG. Try increasing the max_execution_time in php.ini

    Actually I set them on my server, the max_execution is 16400, upload_maxsize is set to 800MB, memory_maxsize is 1800MB and post_maxsize is also adjusted to a higher range. Restarted the apache still got the same issue. But when I did a test using http://thestockfootagecompany.com/ffmpegtest.php it gives me an error. I also experimenting changing another file mp4 and mov files (lower than 200MB) inside that code, it gives no error and displays the info of the files except for that 300MB mov files.
    Is there something wrong with my FFMPEG?

    Ah, yes. According to the output of your ffmpegtest.php file, you don't have a decoder for ProRes. ProRes wasn't added into FFMPEG until May of last year. If you're working with an older version of FFMPEG you'll need to update it to version .11 or later.

    Thanks, I'll let my hosting update my ffmpeg to a newer version. I'll give you a heads up of what is my progress after updating FFMPEG.

    Hi Kyle,

    It's been a long time pass and hostgator was able to install FFMPEG according to them, but I have a problem now all scripts is not anymore running in php, and they are telling me to use line command tool. They told me and this was the statement;

    "Unfortunately, the ffmpeg-php extension will not build against this version of ffmpeg. I'm afraid that the best thing to do in this case will be to call ffmpeg directly from your scripts."

    I feel sick after hearing this. Is there a way that your plugin can run with the use of the new FFMPEG released version?

    My plugin doesn't use the ffmpeg-php extension, because it hasn't been updated in years and I assumed that eventually it would stop working. I thought it was bad enough to require FFMPEG and to also require an unusual PHP extension would be excessive. The plugin uses the PHP command exec which was clearly enabled on your server in the past, and I hope your host hasn't decided to change that.

    Are you unable to generate thumbnails? Have you upgraded WordPress or my plugin in the meantime? The current version of the plugin (3.0.3) works with WordPress 3.5.1 and the latest version of FFMPEG for thumbnails only. If you're still on WordPress 3.3 then you can't update beyond version 2.0.6 of my plugin, which can only generate thumbnails with your version of FFMPEG. In a few minutes I'm going to release version 3.1 of my plugin which should be able to encode videos with the latest version of FFMPEG as well. But again, it only works with WordPress 3.5 or later.

    I was not able to successfully generate a thumbnail, and I'm still using the 3.3.1 WordPress I guess. I also got this error message;
    Can't open movie file.

    sh: /../../../../../usr/bin/ffmpeg: No such file or directory.

    Looks like you have the wrong path for ffmpeg in your plugin settings. Go to the Video Embed & Thumbnail Generator Settings page and make sure you have the correct absolute path to ffmpeg.

    Hi Kyle,

    It's been a long while with no replying to you, but it's looks good now and it's working. The absolute path are now changed.

    Thanks for the support anyway.
