General Showing all posts from other Categories

I’ve set up my site with a 5 top level categories including the General categorey. When I post to a categorey called ‘My Portfolio’ it also shows in the General categorey and therefore on the front page – is this normal?

I just one articles posted to specific categories just to show in that categorey only and not be listed in General.
