@kjetilgf – It appears you are using an “off” version of Atahualpa … and that theme even in its standard version from the repository has an extremely large amount of settings.
That being the case, a default installation of the theme works fine with NextGEN Gallery but any customization via the theme options or elsewhere may cause conflicts creating the issues you are seeing.
Do you still see the same problems if you temporarily switch to a default WordPress Twenty series theme?

You are quite right – though it was new to me that changing theme settings (especially on a well-made theme like Atahualpa) could cause problems like this. Updating the theme to its latest version did not help, put switching to one of the default themes did.
Finding the exact setting(s) in Atahualpa that cause the problems would take some time, and I might loose something important in the design on the way.
So… In our case, I think this makes for a good time to redesign the site.
