Before the update, G+ sharing will show the “Featured Image” of the post as the thumbnail.

However, once I update to Jetpack 3.0, all new posts can’t show the right thumbnail (I mean the “Featured Image”) in G+ share.

There are no problem of FB share and Linkedin share, they are all showing the “Featured Image” as thumbnail.

And the old post created before the update, can show “Featured Image” in G+ share, too.

What’s wrong about it? And what can I do now?

    Thanks a lot!

  • I actually had the same problem with G+ starting yesterday, before I updated Jetpack. Perhaps the problem is on Google’s end.

Yes, the problem is with Google+. It randomly refuses to load images, or indeed any site preview at all. That was already the case before the Jetpack 3 update, and it’s still the case now when I just rechecked. The OpenGraph image tags are there, Google+ just won’t load (some of) the images.

IΒ΄ve got the same problem. Does anyone knows a solution?

I would suggest using this tool to find out what information Google is able to gather from your posts.

Much like Facebook, Google crawls your posts and searches for meta tags to built its post previews. If you use an Open Graph plugin, or a plugin including Open Graph meta tags into your posts, you should look at the output of those plugins, and make sure it includes an image meta tag if you’ve inserted an image into your post or defined a Featured Image.

If you use Jetpack to handle your Open Graph meta tags, you should be good to go: Jetpack automatically creates an image meta tag if you’ve inserted an image into your post or defined a Featured Image, as long as that image is larger than 200x200px (as per Facebook’s requirements).

If that doesn’t help, could you all let me know your site URL so I can have a look?

    Hi Jeremy,

Im using Jetpack. The open graph data is ok. Facebook sharing also works. It must be a problem at Googles side.

    My blog: http://www.huegelhelden.de

It seems that google+ grabs the featured image at random..

    Greetings

@phillipsburgh Google’s tool seems to detect the image attached to your posts:
    https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=http%3A%2F%2Fxn--hgelhelden-9db.de%2Fwiesloch-16-jaehriger-tatverdaechtiger-nach-sexuellen-uebergriffen-auf-zwei-frauen-festgenommen%2F

The errors reported on that page are related to the lack of Authorship markup, so it shouldn’t affect the look of your posts on Google+. The problem consequently seems to be on Google’s end, as you mentioned.

Thanks, Jeremy. LetΒ΄s wait and have a cup of tea πŸ™‚

Having the same issue on my site. http://beartoons.com

Ever since google+ updated to large preview images of the featured image I don’t get that image showing up. Rather it is my profile image or other banner ads are my only choices but never the featured image.

With the new change I heard image size must be at least 516 pixels wide and my stuff conforms to that but still no good. Any advice would be appreciated

@bearman I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you here. Google+ seems to be able to grab the image from the Open Graph meta tags you’ve added via the WordPress SEO plugin, but chooses not to display it.

Like for @phillipsburgh, the problem seems to be on Google’s end.

Yep, phillipsburgh’s recommendation of a cup of tea is unfortunately the best we’ve been able to come up with. I had the problem for about 4 days, then it resolved itself without any intervention from me.

@jeremy thanks for checking. It is a loop where some people on tell me it is a settings or theme issue and others say it is a google issue but good luck getting any support from them

@mjvito I have had the issue for two months without it resolving itself

Google’s own Data Testing Tool is a good way to find out where the problem comes from. It allows you to see what Google sees when crawling your site. If Google weren’t able to grab images from your posts, you would see it there, and would then get a recommendation to help you fix the problem.

But as we’ve seen earlier, Google does see an image when crawling your post:
    http://i.wpne.ws/VwlH

Unfortunately, it would seem that for some reason it decides not to use that image in Google+ post previews. I’m not sure why.

I would be really grateful if you could help me! On Google news…it keeps pulling a business card on my site, and not my featured image. Check it out:

    Boyhood Google

Here is what Jeremy’s Data Testing Tool said:

    hatom-feed
    hatom-entry:
Error: At least one field must be set for HatomEntry.
    Error: Missing required field “entry-title”.
    Error: Missing required field “updated”.
    Error: Missing required hCard “author”.

What could this be? BTW, I downloaded Jet Pack and it said my site was unaccessible. I have a WordPress.org site, does that make a difference?

    Thank you so much!!!
