[FYI] Update links 1.5 (62 posts)

  1. Under /wp-admin/update-links.php, you need to change the permissions for that file to 755. I believe only then will the "Track Links’ Update Times" feature work. My blogroll list in my sidebar wasn't working until I manually loaded that page, then changed the file permissions.

    A dev or mod can correct me if I'm wrong of course.

    This file doesn't appear to be called or included from any where. Should it be run as a cron job?

  3. Nevermind...I guess yeah, it needs to be run as a cron job. Thanks for pointing that out. =)

    Keep bumping this thread, please?

  4. Yeah, I saw that and was really stoked. Things have been great so far!

    I'm running it in a cron job and it seems to be working.

  6. All seems to be well for me, too. DrDave informed me of another method, so I'll post that on my blog later. In any case, this is another bump.

    Read this (from btvillarin, guess he forgot to post it here): http://blogged.btvillarin.com/2005/02/15/update-links/

    Yeah, I saw that, thanks. :) I just hadn't checked the Track Links Updates box. Hopefully that was it.

    Surely you could just go into the Update Linkroll plug-in and change the line from

    include_once(ABSPATH.WPINC.'/links-update-xml.php');

    to

    include_once(ABSPATH.WPINC.'/update-links.php');

    no?

    or something similar, as it's not in the WP Includes folder...

    Probably you could. I quit using the plugin a while ago because I suspected it was slowing down my site, especially when weblogs.com was having problems.

  11. @gregorsmith: I believe I stopped using that as well because it was updating every time any page was accessed. At least with a cron job, it could be controlled less frequently.

    @timeistight: If update-links.php is using ping-o-matic, perhaps it'd be fine to use.

    @gregorsmith: If update-links.php is using ping-o-matic, would you be so kind to try it out? (I can't - I'm at work at the moment.)

    :)

    I prefer to keep it as a cron job.

    Anyone know how often it should be run to avoid missing any updates? I'm currently running it hourly and seem to be missing updated sites including PhotoMatt, which I suspect does ping pingomatic.

    I see the pingomatic blog is promising Some big news coming so maybe we just need to be patient.

    The missing updates may be to do with ping-o-matic

    I'm not even sure (I might be wrong) if most blog systems ping ping-o-matic, thus far the only blogs to be marked as updated in my blogroll is WordPress blogs

    at least most, if not every blog system pings weblogs.com

    I don't think that's it. WordPress pings pingomatic by default. I'd also be surprised if pingomatic didn't incorporate of ping services data in theirs.

    Either the service is not yet ready or it needs to be read more frequently than hourly.

    What I meant to say was the only updated blogs I'm getting from ping-o-matic are WordPress ones, no MT ones, No Blogger ones, only WP

    Which makes me think ping-o-matic isn't the best solution for tracking weblog updates

  17. Yeah, I'm not sure what to do. Does this thread deserve to keep getting bumped up?

    I think it does...

    Not everyone has access to a cron job, thats why the plugin came about in the first place

    I've tried changing the plugin line to

    include_once(ABSPATH.'wp-admin/update-links.php');

    and it causes more problems than before and needleess to say, doesnt work...

  19. Alright, cool, thanks for trying that out. If you can, you should edit your previous post to reflect that that doesn't work. =/

    Isn't it scary when things go ::bump:: in the night?

  21. Nice to see this getting bumped by a couple people - keep it going until a mod gets mad. *LoL*

    I don't have access to cron jobs on my web space either. Does anyone know if there is a plugin/hack that will work with Strayhorn? Overall I am quite impressed with Strayhorn; I'd really like the "recent linkroll updates" to work, though. If it won't work I may have to resort back to Blogrolling.com. (BLECH!)

    I think I'll send a question to the hacker's list about this.

    hi folks
    does anyone know if it is worthwhile updating from wordprss 1.2.2
    to wordpress 1.5?

    if so, how do i do it?

    with respect from marion

  26. Marion: Please start a new thread. With all due respect, your post had nothing to do with updated links in 1.5. Please edit your post so others won't follow suit. Thanks.

    It seems that the entire "Options" - "Links Manager" tab is not in WP 1.5. From the WP 1.2 screen shot the Options sub menu is: General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Miscellaneous, Permalinks, Link Manager. In WP 1.5, the Options sub menu is: General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Permalinks, Miscellaneous. Is this an oversight or is it an intentional omission?

    I set up a cron job, but I've had to remove it as it's eaten its way through an awful lot of my bandwidth.

    For now I've bookmarked update-links.php, not an ideal solution, but nevermind

    OK. A cheap solution that seems to work: I took the old
    <?php include_once(ABSPATH.WPINC."/links-update-xml.php"); ?>

    line and updated it to
    <?php include_once("http://mysite.com/wp-admin/update-links.php"); ?>

    now things are updating, but it doesn't look like all my favorites are pinging ping-o-matic yet.

    One or two, one or two....

    Is there a way to refer to a service that more blogs actually ping to? I've just realised that I don't link to that many wordpress blogs. Most of my friends use Blogspot. What's that about?
