• Just a brief thought…

Should the future of the WordPress core functionality be:
    – a Post-Anything weblog with customisable category & tag RSS filters.
    – core openID (or versatile login options, e.g. Twitter/Facebook connect).
    – realtime.

Basically, a self-hosted social media stream/timeline (emphasis on media, not just a particular genre of text article). But to remain properly social while being self-hosted requires core integration with social networks. Hence openID, Facebook/Twitter connect (or whatever the future of social inter-network user authentication is) needs to be in the WordPress core. And of course, for this to be useful it needs to be realtime searchable.

  • The WordPress core should stay as lean and simple as possible. It should be the common grounds for all WP users. Not everyone uses their site as a “media stream”, so I think that such functionality would be best left to separate branches or plugins.
