Stupid question -- I'm a total novice -- but can I use my wordpress site as an FTP server? I'm trying to transfer files from my old desktop PC to my new laptop and was wondering if I could use the wordpress server as the connection...thanks!

That's a convoluted way of thinking/going about it. Technically, to be pedantic, you cannot use WordPress as an FTP server. You could put files on the server hosting your site, and then retrieve them. That's not very WordPress specific though :)
Have you considered FileZilla: http://filezilla-project.org/
Or a USB stick. Or an external USB hard drive?
