I've just added the alpha tags functionality for these forums. Please start adding tags and excuse the ugliness of the interface for the moment. It should get much better soon, I just wanted to let you all start getting data in.

If you want to know the best way to get started with tags or some standard ideas, I've posted some ideas to this thread:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/31779

(Also note the new URIs, old links still work, of course.)

Eventually I hope to replace the static forum structure we have now with a completely need- and user-driven one created from the tags.

Now this is going to be very neat and is a technically based coder solution to a practical user problem. Nice work Matt. Thanks.

I just tried to tag a thread, and I got a database connection error (the purty WP white/gray box, generic error screen).

Nevermind. Maybe the problem was just between the keyboard and the chair. ;) It's working.

Okay I just fixed the bug where you couldn't add the same tag to multiple threads. Whoops! Watch for falling rocks, and keep tagging. :)

Ok, maybe I'm just stupid and blind...but how do you add a tag - I only see the added tags but nowhere to input one!

Looks like the rocks are still falling... :)

    An excellent idea Matt. Thanks!

    Look above the googleads.

    "Look above the googleads."

It actually vanished for a bit. Matt is still clearing the roadway.

    What google ads?

Aren't there Google ads above everyt thread? (Between the thread title and the first post - you don't see them?)

"Aren't there Google ads above everyt thread?"

Not if you're blocking them. But then, you shouldn't be... ;)

Uh oh, you're in trouble now Moshu;-)

google ads are blocked by FF by default btw.

    the idea sounds promising.

"google ads are blocked by FF by default btw."
Actually they aren't. I use Firefox and they show up just fine. You need to use an extension to explicitly block them.

This is neat, but confusing since they look like they are part of the ad. Can they be changed to be under the search column or highlighted in such a way that they stand out differently.

And for everyone, could we get a better explanation of what these are and what they are for and how they are to be used? Then sticky that to the top so everyone can learn. They sound great but are still vague.

Ads are no longer shown to logged in users.

All the tag-adding bugs should be fixed now.

No more ads? Often it was showing me something like "The Best of Manitoba" - and I thought it was referring to me :)

Ah, now it looks like something serious! And it is starting to make sense. And one of the benefits of signing up for the forum is to get rid of the ads....interesting.

Thanks, Matt, for all the hard work.

FYI: I don't know if it is part of something bigger or of the formatting of the new tag, but the bolding of the unanswered posts is now gone. Makes it harder to find the lost and ignored souls.

"I don't know if it is part of something bigger or of the formatting of the new tag, but the bolding of the unanswered posts is now gone. Makes it harder to find the lost and ignored souls."

Yes, please return bold on single post threads! Made surfing for unanswered posts easy.

Back to tags: a couple questions come to mind on how extensive they'll be implemented.

Q1 . Will search eventually recognise them, or provide a mechanism to limit to those listings?

    Q. Will a full index of all tags be provided at some point, like say at:

    http://wordpress.org/support/tags/

Thanks for clearing up the "no ads" thing, Matt. The only ads FF routinely blocks even with the extension are popups or those you specifically "adblock", so I was pretty confused!

I would also like to see the bold on single post threads return.

YAVFBHR: Yet Another Vote For Bold Headings Return

I feel lost without this visual clue to guide me. Although I should be able to figure it out by looking at those little number thingies.

On forum tags (and hence on original topic):
    - thanks for setting this up
    - can we have one of those tag cloud things?
    - more generally, how can we search for posts with a particular tag (e.g., thumbnail?) the only way I can find to do this is to find a post already bearing that tag

On bold headings for posts with no responses (and hence on topic of recent replies):
    - yes please, do bring them back!
    - that would mean that this post, which has just slipped off the front page and into 1-hour territory, would be bolded:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/31893

Andrew, giving his question an indirect bump.

Okay, have a major rev to the tag functionality in tonight, go ahead and bang on it. You can now specify tags when starting a new topic, as well.

  27. The new tag functionality is nice, but I'd have to disagree with replacing the forum categories with a tag heatmap. It's just too cluttered for my tastes.

  28. Agreed. The tags need to go to the bottom and the categories back to the top.

The new tags heatmap at the top is way ugly. Different sizes and weights just don't work, and they push the Latest Discussions almost off my browser window. Also having to scroll waaaay down to find the categories is not fun.
Just a side thought, would there be a way to merge the tags and categories together? Maybe just have a few tags with a link to more for that category?

    ie.
How-To and Troubleshooting Once it's running
    css database keywords php etc.
Themes and Templates XHTML and CSS
    images css hosting xhtml etc.

That is, instead of having them separate and in two places. Just thinking out loud mind you, it might(not) be a bad idea.

The tags map looks junky, cluttered, and too large. It takes up too much space. I would prefer it to be at the bottom of the page or just a link for those who actually would want to see it. Just my little 2c. Either way, we'll probably still all come here.
