   I'm not even sure what I did that made this happen, but suddenly the content of my footer is displaying in my sidebar - why would this be?

   i can't see the footer anywhere ... only when i click on one of the TDY writers do i see a tiny fragment of what looks like a footer ... aligned properly under the main content.

   i'm browsing using safari, so that may give you different results.

   does your side bar by any chance contain <? php get_footer ?> you might have that mistakenly in your sidebar.php

   none of the above - but thank you all for the suggestions.

   I took out the snippet of code for my stat counter and suddenly the footer was back...

   so, i'll sort out what the issue was with that code - again, thanks.
