Would it be ideal to load fonts from your own local server or to utilize Google's Font Directory?

I believe the Google Font API is faster because the user does not need to download fonts from your own server (especially if you're on a shared server). And you wouldn't have to deal with copyright issues.

I have never noticed a difference in load times, even after using local custom fonts, on shared hosting

    Just some input.....

Yes, I suppose any load time difference would be in the millisecond range.

Is there a way to load the fonts from my own server as a backup in case the Google Font doesn't load?

I don't think so...but you could find free alternatives for the fonts you decide to use and serve those from your own server. Then just add those fonts to your font stacks...
