Folder Structure for Non-WordPress Files - New Top-Level Folder? (9 posts)

Is there a reason that makes it 'bad' to create a new top-level folder at the same hiearchy as the wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes folders? I'm moving a bunch of video files over to the blog server and it would make the file path much simpler to just create a new top-level folder for them.

    Thanks,

    Tom

I can't think of one, Tom. But then again, if I look down at my feet right now, there's Velcro holding my shoes closed, so... well, you see where I'm going. :-)

I have my audio, video and a couple of others located there. I would think that as long as file and folder permissions are correct, and the and the directories aren't browsable, they would be okay. I guess I'm curious to know if there are differing opinions as well.

I haven't quite grokked how the directories are working, it started out as blog.wendelbrume.com/htdocs/wp-etc but now it's just wendelbrume.com/htdocs/wp-etc. Not sure what happened. (That's how the FTP client sees the site.)

If the folders are under htdocs, that makes them browsable, right? But then, all the folders are under htdocs, so I don't know what's right there.

    Heh, I like velcro!

htdocs is generally a folder that is created within your home directory for web accessible files.

when you ftp in, are you inside an htdocs that is above your already mentioned htdocs?

this also might be a case of your host requiring an extra htdocs for subdomains that arent www

I would contact your host and ask about the necessity of any second htdocss, but by the sound of it its the subdomain thing that requires it. I assume that htdocs is NOT necessary in your urls, right?

No, I only see one htdocs.

Correct, I never see htdocs unless I'm in the FTP client. We did break the domain into two IP addresses early on. I had a regular HTML site on the domain first, and then added WP later. Then I wanted the domain to point just to the WP blog, and I think it's at that point I ended up with two IP addresses. Now I'm trying to move all my files under the single domain again, but with WP in place.
